View Full Version : floor support when waterproofing

I am considering waterproofing the basement
of my new house. I am in the process of
getting estimates from various contractors.
I have checked a local consumer's group for
references and will also check the BBB.

So far, each of them has advised having
a trench cut on the interior perimeter,
draining the water through a pipe and
using a sump pump to remove it.

One of the 4 contractors advised adding
metal rods to support the floor. He said that
once the trench was dug, there would be
no support from the footers for the basement
floor and, accordingly, it would crack.
So he proposes to put the rods into the
floor every 10 feet; as I understand it,
the rods with then rest on the footer.

None of the other contractors has mentioned
this as a necessary step.

Does any one have ideas on whether this is
common or exceptional.

While I have heard of supporting the foundation walls by installing rods to strengthen the lateral support of the bottom of the walls, it is very rare that this would be necessary.

Some contractors also will leave one foot sections of the floor intact every ten feet or so, this would serve the same purpose.
Since I do not know the type of soil or the location of the house and other important details, I would recommend that you contact a local NAWSRC Certified Waterproofing Specialist or e-mail me at stevea@pioneerbasement.com
