Hi, Hoping I can get some advice..I am looking to build a brand new home in La Salle, Manitoba, Canada. My question is related to a Piled Foundation compared to non-piled. The home will be a 2 storey 2000sq. ft will full basement. The weather here ranges from -40 Celsius in winter to +40 Celsius in summer, so broad range. It is a humid environ in summer and dry winter. From the builder specs this is what the foundation is for the base pkg:
[-8" x 8" steel reinforced concrete walls,]
[-4" weeping tile covered by a minimum of 6" clean stone,]
[-Exterior foundation sprayed with damp proofing]
[-Radon gas protection under basement floor]
The upgrade would be to have the Foundation "PILED" for approx $9700.00 extra.
Now I am wanting to see if this is a real benefit, or is it even worth out...is it just overkill? not sure exactly if I should get it....Please tell me your opinion or pros/cons, etc...
Thank you, I do hope u can help and I have included as much info as I can...anything I;m missing please let me know.

My apologies of delay in response.

A piled foundation would be required if the builder knows they are building on soils that lack the capacity to hold up the dead load of building.

Is this area known for poor soils? A soil boring test could tell you if piles are needed. A Geo-tech Engineer would perform core tests or blow-outs of soils.
